Suffragettes

The Suffragettes were Members of the Women's Organisation who fought for the right to vote in Britain from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
Suffragettes began to create a movement that started off small and led to women and even some men fighting for equal rights within gender all over the world.
Suffragettes began with small meetings and peaceful demonstrations, however when they were soon turned away from the government, it created riots outside of Political figures homes, The houses of Parliament and on the streets of Britain and ended up with many women arrested. Once in prison some women went to extreme measures by starving themselves in order to create a stand using scare tactics against the government.
Emmeline Pankhurst
The Pankhurst family were the suffragette founders. Emmeline Pankhurst was a political activist and the leader of the Suffragette movement. In 1999 Time said that Pankhurst was one of the most important people of the 20th century and stated that "she shaped an idea of women for our time; she shook society into a new pattern from which there could be no going back."
One of the most famous Suffragettes was Emily Davidson who jumped onto the race tracks at the Epson Derby in order to hang the Suffragette flag over the Queens horse. However, through this act of rebellion Emily lost her life.
My character Alice, is a young rising suffragette who is supporting the fight for women to get the vote. We, as a performance mention the famous suffragettes such as Emily Davidson to honour those who fought hard to gain Women's rights and change society to what we know today.
